The proposed route along Sanatorium Road will be fantastic, but the speed of the traffic is terrible and needs to be slowed down. Also, the railway bridge is really hard for most people to cross. Parents with buggies particularly, but also the rail to help cyclists up and down the steps is too close to the wall for bikes with straight handlebars. The Victoria Park route is ideal. That's the way I cycle into town anyway. The traffic drives fast along Romilly Road West though - completely ignoring the 20mph speeds. Does the dotted blue line along Cowbridge Road East mean there will be segregated cycling? The speed of traffic from Ely Bridge to Victoria Park is a real issue. And also electric scooters on pavements which are a real hazard. On Pencisely Road I have often thought there should be a segregated cycle lane. Is that what's being proposed? Again people drive too fast along this road, and a cyclist was killed a couple of years ago.

1) Do you agree that the existing walking routes shown (solid red line) are currently suitable for walking?

No

Please comment:

There aren’t any according to the map

2) Do you agree that the existing cycling routes shown (solid blue line) are currently suitable for cycling?

Partially

Please comment:

This single stretch in itself is ok but it doesn’t connect to anywhere else.

3) Do you agree with the proposed new routes for walking (dashed red line)?

No

Please comment:

The proposed routes don’t make a route. There is one tiny loop and 2 other roads. This is incoherent.

4) Do you agree with the proposed new routes for walking and cycling (dashed blue line)?

No

Please comment:

The map doesn’t show how cyclists will he prioritised over motorists.

Lansdowne Road is an excellent direct thoroughfare which is about to have traffic calming built on it. Why isn’t this road getting any cycle lane provision to help cyclists from the west of the city to travel directly to the centre? The proposed cycle highway will bypass Canton rendering it useless for anyone living on this side of the railway line.

A one way system making a triangle around Canton with Cowbridge Road East, Leckwith Road (to Atlas Road) and Atlas/Lansdowne Road. If this system was one way, there would be enough space for bus or cycle lanes to truly encourage people to swap to active/public transport.

The route by the stadium starts in a terrible place (where traffic is meeting and expanding) the route needs to start much earlier on.

Covers most of the main arteries around Canton - my concern is enough space to cycle without cars getting too close or meeting the path of pedestrians

Would be interested to see how Canton links with schools like Glantaf & Plasmawr as a few primary schools in Canton feed into them.

2) Do you agree that the existing cycling routes shown (solid blue line) are currently suitable for cycling?

No

Please comment:

The Leckwith Road section is far from an ideal cycle route: 1) It is a shared pavement with pedestrians. 2)The signalised crossings are designed for pedestrians. 3) there is no specific cycle segregation or infrastructure. 4) cyclists have to give way to cars at every single junction. The Ely Trail section is a compressed gravel path and prone to being very muddy and water pooling in places. It should be smooth tarmac.

3) Do you agree with the proposed new routes for walking (dashed red line)?

Partially

Please comment:

They are all good around the schools but there should be many more. Walking should be the default on every street.

4) Do you agree with the proposed new routes for walking and cycling (dashed blue line)?

Partially

Please comment:

They are a good start but there should be many more segregated bike lanes. Cowbridge Road East and /or Lansdowne Road could be a segregated route. There is no route north from Canton to Llandaff.

5) Are there additional routes for walking (existing or proposed) that you think should be shown on the map?

Yes

If yes, please provide details below:

The key route is a better route connecting Canton to the city centre. Also to Taff Trail. Also north to e.g. Llandaff, Fairwater, Cantonian High School. Clive Road is a key corridor linking N-S

6) Are there additional routes for cycling (existing or proposed) that you think should be shown on the map?

Yes

If yes, please provide details below:

More segregated routes / LTNs connecting Cowbridge Road East to local residential areas. A segregated route north to Llandaff. A segregated route on one or more of the roads leading to the city centre (Pencisely/Cowbridge Road East/Lansdowne). Clive Road is a key corridor linking N-S

7) Do you agree with the proposals in the schedule of schemes for this ward?

Yes

It is a welcome step forward. The focus on school streets is good. The segregated Cycle way is deperately needed.

8) Are there any additional schemes you think should be included in the schedule of schemes?

Yes

Please comment, including location information:

Hopefully this is justthe start. More segregated cycleways and walking infrastructure is needed. As a district commercial centre in itself and only a stone's throw fro the city centre, Canton should be criss-crossed with safe walking and cycling routes.

9) Do you have any other comments on the Draft Active Travel Network Map for Cardiff?

A welcome step forward with much to deliver. I hope many of the proposed routes can be completed in the next three years so that another new batch of proposals can be ready to keep improving the city's active travel infrastructure.
